Winter Warnings: 'Occupy' Staying Alive

Local authorities have varying degrees of leeway to require 'citizens' to vacate 'public' spaces in the name of 'health and safety'.  For example, when the temperature drops below a certain level 'homeless' persons in some cities are not given a choice when it comes to placement in shelters. The survival of the movement during the winter months can learn a lot from the survival skills that homeless persons have developed over years of staying alive “outside”.

In places like New York City, homeless children 'occupy' the rooftop of buildings and abandon subway tunnels. In some cases, officials in cities like NYC have either given up on or reach a stalemate with the homeless persons that are occupying various spaces in their cities.  Consider channeling the 'active' and 'aggressive' effort of city officials to blunt the 'Occupy' protest into spaces and places that have been abandon to a growing number of the most destitute members of our society.

Please consider and share your suggestions about options to deal with the 'cold' and the leverage that the winter months offers officials that are counting on the 'temperature' to have a chilling affect on the movement.

For example:

1) Flash protests in various and sundry places – modeled after flash mobs mobilized using social media and electronic devices.
2) Share and leverage the media attention directed at the movement by occupying some of the same places and types of places homeless persons occupy as a matter of survival.

Re: Winter Warnings: 'Occupy' Staying Alive

I suggest getting winter clothing and accessories (gloves, thermals, socks, neg temp rated sleeping bags, etc) donations going asap. Also, be prepared to huddle together during GA.  the inclement weather is mostly dangerous if one isn't prepared.

The love in your heart for your fellow man, or woman, will only keep you so warm.

Right on! I was thinking about this as well and had some great ideas for flash mob protests like inside of Wal mart. They wouldn't know what to do with so many people in Wal Mart, they don't want to throw everyone out and lose customers but they wouldn't want the protesters inside either.

Re: Winter Warnings: 'Occupy' Staying Alive

Why doesn't the Occupy movement disband for Thanksgiving, spend the winter planning, organizing, reaching out to people in suburban and rural communities, and then resume downtown outdoor activities in the spring?  In Missouri, it is especially important to visit and talk to people in the middle of the state, because that's where poor and middle class voters are being duped to support the wealthy. There's a lot that can be accomplished indoors. People can meet in places of worship, apartments, homes, libraries, and community centers. That way the movement can resume with renewed energy when the weather gets warmer.

This is a plan, maybe not the best plan? Let me explain if the movment disbands, the whole purpose is also lost. As soon as keneir plaza is givin up then the movent fails? They will think they have won. They are counting on the weather to break the occupystl. This has been reported by many outlets. I DONT want to see any fellow person of the movement get hurt or sick. I only wish well warm wishes for all that stay there. We must find ways to support and keep all that occupystl warm and safe. Lets work on that first then reach out to the rual areas. The safety and health of the occupystl people is JOB # 1

Re: Winter Warnings: 'Occupy' Staying Alive

I didn’t mean to disband the movement. I meant to leave Kiener Plaza during the cold months. Isn’t the purpose of the movement to raise political awareness and galvanize positive political action? That doesn’t need to be done from a public park alone.  Any place people can “peaceably assemble” is appropriate. They – whoever they is – won’t win if you leave voluntarily. You have already won. If you focus on occupying the park, then endurance and stubbornness will take the place of your real goals.

Re: Winter Warnings: 'Occupy' Staying Alive

We must also keep in mind that the movement and the people participating reach much farther than any occupied space.  The occupation of the space is in most ways symbolic.  It gives a persistent reminder to people that we are here and dedicated to change.

The occupied spaces are the tip of the movement.  There are about 200 occupiers in NYC but when they marched on time square, the place was overrun.  The space that is permanently occupied, by likely less than 10% of the supporters is a demonstration to make evident that we are not going away.

That said, safety of the people involved should not be ignored to promote any cause.

A good idea that was brought up in chat today was re-using all those empty water bottles by filling them with hot water.  I used to do this when I was without.  You can fill at most fast food places and pack into your blankets, coats etc.  Just be careful that they are closed tightly because nothing is worse than waking up in cold water.

Re: Winter Warnings: 'Occupy' Staying Alive

Remember the old 60s slogan "Save water, shower with a friend"? Maybe our new one could be "Stay warm, snuggle with a friend". smile
People in our area aren't used to being outdoors in the cold; we aren't taught how to dress for it. In northern areas, people are perfectly fine working and playing outside in weather that makes us down here run inside for the electric blankets. Layers, guys. Loose, light layers, including your socks. Tight clothes look good but don't keep you that warm. Wear a hat to minimize heat loss. For windy days, balaclavas will keep your face warm.... you can get them at REI, Alpine Shop, and motorcycle gear shops. Keep well-hydrated. If the weather turns bitter, go home. It's okay. We'll regroup when St. Louis, as always, warms right back up. I'm a cold weather person; I'll be down there holding signs with you when it's frigid.
Hang in there. We won't be defeated.
     Peace,
       Sue

PS--I should have mentioned that wool socks are your very best friend in cold weather.
